The logic seemed simple and irrefutable: Faced with the possibility of losing their best offensive player following the 1995 season, the New York Giants were left with no choice but to match the six-year, $16.45 million contract being offered by the San Francisco 49ers to tailback Rodney Hampton.

In retrospect, the decision to keep Hampton was as ill-fated as the decision to keep Dan Reeves for one more season after the coach lost his power struggle to gain more influence on draft day.
