PERTH, April 21 AAP - A man charged over the death of a baby who was run over in the
front yard of a Perth home has appeared in a Perth court.
Benjamin Alan Butler, 24, of Thornlie in Perth's south-east, is charged with dangerous
driving causing death, dangerous driving occasioning actual bodily harm and driving under
the influence.
Butler is alleged to have run over Tania Moorby and her 11-month-old daughter Grace
Moorby as they stood in the driveway of their Thornlie home on Friday.
Grace died on the way to hospital while Ms Moorby was seriously injured in the crash.
Butler, who is on bail, was accompanied by his father to his court appearance in Armadale
Magistrates Court today.
He sat beside his solicitor, Bill Evangel, who asked for a four-week adjournment for
Butler to seek further legal advice.
Butler sat impassively throughout the hearing.
His father later attempted to shield him from waiting media as they left the courthouse
and rushed towards a waiting car.
Butler appeared stressed and on the verge of tears as he attempted to hide his face from cameras.
He was granted $5,000 bail and a surety to make another appearance in the same court on May 20.
Police allege the V8 Monaro driven by Butler struck a yellow Hyundai before hitting
Ms Moorby and her baby in the driveway of their home shortly before 1pm on Friday.
Witnesses say the car became airborne, destroying a carport and ploughing into the
front of a neighbouring house.
