MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), a leading developer of telecommunications products for next-generation fixed, mobile, and packet networks, today introduced the SIP-SS7 (session initiation protocol-signaling system 7) Gateway. The SIP-SS7 Gateway gives operators migrating to voice over packet (VoP) networks access to legacy services in circuit-switched networks--without requiring complete replacement of network elements or replication of intelligent network (IN) services in multiple domains. Tekelec is featuring the new gateway with its other advanced network signaling and switching solutions at SUPERCOMM in Chicago June 22-24, 2004, in Booth 22903.
"Operators are challenged to reduce overhead by creating faster, more efficient networks and to increase revenue with new multimedia services," explained Fred Lax, Tekelec president and CEO. "Many service providers worldwide are deploying VoP systems to streamline their networks and extend their service offerings. However, because of their substantial investments in circuit-switched networks, they need a solution that also leverages their existing resources and services as they transition to new technology. That's where our new gateway comes into play.
"Tekelec's SIP-SS7 Gateway serves as a stepping-stone to the next generation of voice technology--without requiring operators to upgrade existing network elements such as service control points," Lax continued. "By enabling VoP networks to seamlessly access routing-based IN services like toll free and number portability, the gateway extends the life of legacy systems while enabling the introduction of new technologies and services. It's a win-win situation."
Ronald Gruia, senior strategic analyst for research firm Frost & Sullivan, added, "Tekelec's SIP- SS7 Gateway allows carriers to migrate from circuit to packet-switched networks at their own pace by enabling them to offer legacy IN services in a next-generation SIP-based call control context. Another benefit of Tekelec's solution is the enhanced voice quality; voice encoding and decoding are reduced because no conversion from VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) to TDM (time division multiplexing) and back to VoIP is needed for SIP-to-SIP calls."
About SIP-SS7 Gateway
The SIP-SS7 Gateway supports transaction management for IN and SIP domains and acts as a SIP redirect server to the SIP domain and a service switching point (SSP) to the IN domain. It provides the functionality of IN routing-based services to the SIP domain -- with minimal changes to either network. The highly scaleable gateway interfaces to SIP-based elements such as softswitches, SIP servers, and SIP phones. It also provides multi-protocol support and protocol conversion. The SIP-SS7 gateway not only provides significant cost savings by extending the life of legacy services and conserving switch resources, it improves network routing and enables operators to deliver services in disparate networks transparently.
