ARGENTINA: ARGENTINE COMPANY TO INVEST US$200 MILLION ON CABLE INTERNET.(Broadbandtech)(Brief Article)

Broadbandtech, the Argentine company in which Intel Corp. has a minority share, plans to invest US$200 million in the next five years in order to provide Internet access via cable TV lines. Jorge Alvarez, the president of Broadbandtech, stated "The business model we're developing is based on using the infrastructure of pre-existing or improved cable networks. Not just high velocity Internet service, but also content specially designed for broadband." Argentina, Latin America's third largest economy, has approximately 5 million cable TV subscribers, out of a population of 36 million people. Argentina has the highest rate of cable TV subscribers in Latin America. In addition, the country has approximately 1.6 million Internet subscribers. Broadbandtech aims to sign up 30,000 subscribers in its first year of business.
