NSW: Londonderry bushfire within metres of my house: resident

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - A resident who watched a bushfire come within metres of engulfing
his Sydney home said walking away with his house intact was like winning the lottery.

Craig Lester's house on the northwestern outskirts of Sydney was nearly destroyed by
a fire that broke out on Thursday afternoon as temperatures rose over 40 degrees celsius.

The fire was only 10 metres from the back of Mr Lester's single storey brick home on
Tadmore Road, but firefighters and a decent-sized firebreak saved the property from destruction.

"At one stage I got very scared when the (fire) front came through the back here, because
the fire was running so quick across the grass," Mr Lester told reporters on Friday.

"The (flames in the) trees were peaking at a high of about 30 feet (nine metres) and
there was a big wall of flames coming through at the back, so it got very hairy at one
stage.

"It was like you'd just won lotto, the house is still standing, we're alive."
