NetLogic Microsystems to Acquire Optichron

Wireless News
03-24-2011
NetLogic Microsystems to Acquire Optichron
Type: News

NetLogic Microsystems, a provider of intelligent semiconductor solutions for Internet networks, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Optichron, a privately-held, fabless semiconductor provider of 3G/4G LTE base station digital front-end (DFE) processors, located in Fremont, California.

Optichron's DFE technology enables signal bandwidth, spectrum maximization and power efficiency for LTE deployments requiring the highest data rates and lowest power consumption.
The acquisition of Optichron will expand and broaden NetLogic Microsystems' footprint in 3G/4G LTE base stations by complementing NetLogic Microsystems' portfolio of multi-core processors, knowledge- based processors and 10 Gigabit Ethernet PHY solutions. Optichron's DFE processors have been designed into base stations by multiple original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and NetLogic Microsystems expects that the acquisition will accelerate Optichron's technical leadership and product roadmaps in the 40nm process node and beyond.

The exponential growth in mobile data traffic in the next five years, coupled with global spectrum scarcity, are forcing service providers and operators worldwide to push the limits on capacity and throughput for their limited spectrum. This is in turn driving a need for next-generation base stations that can support wider bandwidth, significantly more signal channels and more protocols (2G/ 3G/4G) in each band. Conventional DFE processing solutions typically support narrow bandwidths, a limited number of channels and a single protocol per signal band, and are therefore costly and inefficient for high-throughput base stations.

"Our combination with Optichron further solidifies our commitment to, and our increasing R&D investments in, the communications infrastructure market," said Ron Jankov, president and chief executive officer at NetLogic Microsystems. "DFE processors are an increasingly critical element of next-generation 3G/4G LTE common- platform base stations, and the combination of NetLogic Microsystems and Optichron further strengthens our technical leadership in this very exciting market."

In connection with the acquisition, NetLogic Microsystems will pay the Optichron stockholders initial cash consideration of approximately $77 million upon the closing of the transaction. NetLogic Microsystems will assume approximately $22 million of restricted stock units for employees of Optichron who join NetLogic Microsystems following the close of the acquisition. In addition, NetLogic Microsystems will pay the Optichron stockholders an earn- out upon the attainment of performance milestones through 2012 for the acquired business. If the maximum earn-out is achieved, an additional cash consideration of approximately $108.5 million would be payable by March 31, 2013, and, an additional consideration of $12.5 million would be paid in shares of NetLogic Microsystems common stock (valued approximately at closing date value), issued only to several Optichron employees, subject to their continued employment after the acquisition. The acquisition has been approved by both companies' board of directors, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2011 and remains subject to customary closing conditions.

NSW: Londonderry bushfire within metres of my house: resident

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - A resident who watched a bushfire come within metres of engulfing
his Sydney home said walking away with his house intact was like winning the lottery.

Craig Lester's house on the northwestern outskirts of Sydney was nearly destroyed by
a fire that broke out on Thursday afternoon as temperatures rose over 40 degrees celsius.

The fire was only 10 metres from the back of Mr Lester's single storey brick home on
Tadmore Road, but firefighters and a decent-sized firebreak saved the property from destruction.

"At one stage I got very scared when the (fire) front came through the back here, because
the fire was running so quick across the grass," Mr Lester told reporters on Friday.

"The (flames in the) trees were peaking at a high of about 30 feet (nine metres) and
there was a big wall of flames coming through at the back, so it got very hairy at one
stage.

"It was like you'd just won lotto, the house is still standing, we're alive."

Qld: Kidnapped journalists reported unharmed

BRISBANE, Aug 27 AAP - An Australian and a Canadian journalist kidnapped by Islamist
insurgents in Somalia together with their translator have not been harmed, an organisation
that defends media freedom says.

The Canadian Press reported that the Paris office of Reporters Without Borders had
obtained details about the condition of 35-year-old Australian photo journalist Nigel
Brennan, 26-year-old Canadian freelance journalist Amanda Landhout and Somali reporter
Abdifatah Mohammed Elmi, who worked as their translator.

They were kidnapped at gunpoint about 25km from the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday.

A spokesman for Reporters Without Borders in Montreal Dennis Trudeau said the three
were apparently uninjured.

"What we have been able to glean is that the journalists - the Canadian, the Australian
and the Somali - are unharmed, they have their clothes, they're getting food regularly
and they may even have access to satellite TV," Mr Trudeau told The Canadian Press.

"I can't say more than that.

"You can understand that the group may be afraid of a possible armed mission to rescue
the journalists."

The group was believed to be in an area about 80km outside of Mogadishu.

Mr Trudeau said no ransom demand had been made yet but the kidnappers may be from the
Air clan, a dissident part of one of the Somali clans.

Journalists and humanitarian workers are frequently abducted for ransom in Somalia,
one of the world's poorest and most violence-torn countries.

Australian Federal Police and extra diplomatic staff have been sent to Somalia to investigate
the kidnapping of the journalists, who are believed to have been abducted as they came
back from interviewing and taking photos at a refugee camp in Afgoye district.

PERTH, April 21 AAP - A man charged over the death of a baby who was run over in the
front yard of a Perth home has appeared in a Perth court.

Benjamin Alan Butler, 24, of Thornlie in Perth's south-east, is charged with dangerous
driving causing death, dangerous driving occasioning actual bodily harm and driving under
the influence.

Butler is alleged to have run over Tania Moorby and her 11-month-old daughter Grace
Moorby as they stood in the driveway of their Thornlie home on Friday.

Grace died on the way to hospital while Ms Moorby was seriously injured in the crash.

Butler, who is on bail, was accompanied by his father to his court appearance in Armadale
Magistrates Court today.

He sat beside his solicitor, Bill Evangel, who asked for a four-week adjournment for
Butler to seek further legal advice.

Butler sat impassively throughout the hearing.

His father later attempted to shield him from waiting media as they left the courthouse
and rushed towards a waiting car.

Butler appeared stressed and on the verge of tears as he attempted to hide his face from cameras.

He was granted $5,000 bail and a surety to make another appearance in the same court on May 20.

Police allege the V8 Monaro driven by Butler struck a yellow Hyundai before hitting
Ms Moorby and her baby in the driveway of their home shortly before 1pm on Friday.

Witnesses say the car became airborne, destroying a carport and ploughing into the
front of a neighbouring house.

Fed: New teachers less literate than 20 years ago: study

CANBERRA, Aug 27 AAP - New teachers have lower standards of literacy and numeracy than
those who entered teaching 20 years ago, a new study has found.

The Australian National University research combined six surveys measuring the literacy
and numeracy of 14-year-old school students.

The surveys then followed the same people into their mid and late 20s as they went
on to further study or started careers.

Researchers Andrew Leigh and Chris Ryan found that in 1983, students entering teaching
degrees tended to be in the 74th percentile - meaning they had better literacy and numeracy
standards than 74 per cent of their age group.

By 2003, the average rank of new student teachers was 61 per cent.

Over the same period, the average rank of new teachers fell from 70 to 62.

Drs Leigh and Ryan blamed declining pay and rising inequality with other professions
for much of the drop in standards.

Compared to non-teachers with a degree, average teacher pay fell by more than 10 per
cent over the period 1983 to 2003, Dr Leigh said.

And there was little to attract talented individuals, who could earn much more in other
professions.

They said performance pay for good teachers could be the most cost-effective way of
raising the quality of the teaching profession.

ICANN Board Chairman to Keynote 'newdomains.org - The Munich Conference on new TLDs'.(Conference news)

United-domains AG announced that ICANN Board Chairman Stephen Crocker will present the keynote speech at the "newdomains.org - The Munich Conference on new TLDs" on September 26th, in Munich

The group said Stephen Crocker, an Internet architect and recently named Chairman of the Board of the international coordinating authority for domain names, ICANN, will present the keynote speech at the upcoming "newdomains.org - The Munich Conference on new TLDs" meeting. His speech on September 26th will mark the kick-off of the two-day international conference. The event, which will bring experts in the fields of technology, trademark law and business from around the world to Munich, will serve as a platform for discussions centering on ICANN's newly adopted program for the introduction of new top-level domain extensions.

According to a release, the conference offers an opportunity for all interested parties to build valuable connections and network with experienced industry professionals. Additionally, it will deliver answers to all questions concerning this change for the Internet

With the introduction of new top-level domains, the group noted that the Internet finds itself at a point in its young lifetime: until now, only a small number of endings such as .com, .net, .org or .info have dominated the Web. Next year however, over 400 applications for new domain endings such as .shop, .web, .berlin or suffixes such as .apple, for example, are expected; the resulting opportunities for Internet users will be as significant as they are challenging.

"Who better to open the only event in Europe focusing on this important topic than one of the people who has had such decisive influence on the development of the Internet--a tool we all now so commonly use," said Markus Eggensperger, co-founder of united-domains, the host of the newdomains.org conference.

Regarding the upcoming event, Dr. Crocker said, "The Internet has experienced unprecedented changes in its 40 year history and the introduction of new top-level domains will be one such challenge. I'm delighted that I can contribute the keynote and hope we can all make the most of this unique moment for the good of the global Internet community."

Atrinsic Updates on NASDAQ Decision.

Atrinsic, a marketer of direct-to-consumer subscription products, including Kazaa - a digital music subscription service, and owner of an internet search marketing agency, Atrinsic Interactive, announced that, on June 7, the Company received a favorable determination from the NASDAQ Listing Qualifications Staff indicating that the Staff has granted the Company's request for the transfer of its listing to The NASDAQ Capital Market.

In a release dated June 10, the Company said securities will begin trading on The NASDAQ Capital Market effective with the open of business on Friday, June 10. The transfer of the Company's listing from The NASDAQ Global Market to The NASDAQ Capital Market should have no impact on trading in the Company's shares, and the Company's stock will continue to trade on NASDAQ under the symbol ATRN.

As previously disclosed, on April 14, the Staff notified the Company that it no longer satisfied the $10 million stockholders' equity requirement for continued listing on The NASDAQ Global Market. The Company subsequently submitted an application for the transfer of its listing to The NASDAQ Capital Market, particularly in light of the Company's belief that it satisfies and will continue to satisfy the criteria for continued listing on The NASDAQ Capital Market, including the applicable $2.5 million stockholders' equity requirement.

Kazaa is a subscription-based digital music service.

UNESCO AND MALAGA FOOTBALL CLUB TEAM UP TO IMAGINE PEACE.

PARIS, France -- The following information was released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO):

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, and the President of the Malaga Football Club (Malaga CF), Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani, signed a four-year agreement aiming to promote peace through sport, the internet and social media on Wednesday 1 June. The signing took place at the Picasso Museum in Malaga, Spain.

"Imagining peace" is the main message of the agreement, which requires UNESCO and Malaga Football Club to mobilize their networks and communities to promote initiatives in favour of intercultural dialogue, education, the fight against doping and against racism.

"The alliance is rooted in the will to promote the values and objectives of healthy, doping-free sport and to help create a society unfettered by racism and discrimination. We must imagine peace and make it become reality," declared the Director-General.

"Our joint purpose is to use the values of sport to educate grown-ups and the young and this is one of the main reasons for our association. The training of young athletes must not be limited to the development of individual, or group, technical skills, it must also draw on the values inherent to sport, such as the will to excel, camaraderie and respect," declared Sheikh Abdullah al-Thani.

UNESCO and Malaga CF will share their resources so as to inspire young people with a new understanding of peace. The internet and social media will be used to promote UNESCO values concerning intercultural dialogue and the importance of education.

The agreement also aims to contribute to the creation of an environment free of racism where girls and boys enjoy the same opportunities; to help foster a social conscience among the young using the information tools that are theirs, i.e. the internet and its social networks; and to implement the principles that underpin UNESCO's Convention Against Doping in Sport.

A joint commission with representatives of UNESCO and Malaga CF will develop initiatives so as to attain these objectives. La Academia, the training centre of Malaga CF's young players, serves as a practical laboratory for the agreement. At present 15 teams of young footballers aged 6 to 19 (i.e. 500 players in total) are trained there.

The two parties will lead regular campaigns with the social media and the internet and develop e-publications with the aim of meeting the needs of young audience.

The association of both parties will be visible every weekend on the playing fields as the players of the first division team of Spanish football will sport UNESCO's logo on their jerseys. The information panels at Malaga's 29,000-capacity La Rosaleda stadium, will also put the UNESCO - Malaga CF partnership in the spotlight, as will the club's website and other communication tools.

Trademark Owners: Consider Pre-Reserving Your .XXX Domains Now!

After a lengthy and contentious approval process, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently entered into an agreement with ICM Registry to delegate the new .xxx top-level domain (TLD). The .xxx domain, intended to serve as an Internet "red light district" (despite being strongly opposed by many in the adult entertainment community itself), will likely go live later this year. In the meantime, ICM Registry has opened a "pre-reservation period" for interested members of adult entertainment industry, and for trademark owners in other industries.

As with ICANN's planned introduction of numerous generic top-level domains (gTLDs) starting next year, the introduction of .xxx presents yet another opportunity for unscrupulous registrants to take advantage of known brands. Further, as registrants of .xxx domain names must provide online, sexually-oriented adult entertainment, there is a significant risk of valuable brands being associated with such "undesirable" content. The pre-reservation service, located at http://domains.icmregistry.com, allows trademark owners to "pre-reserve," free of charge, .xxx domains of interest. For instance, a provider of traditionally wholesome goods, such as Disney, could pre-reserve the domain name disney.xxx.

Looking beyond the pre-registration phase, domain names can be defensively registered as soon as the .xxx "sunrise period" begins, which is expected to launch in August 2011. A defensive registration will allow certain trademark owners to "block" a domain name indefinitely upon payment of a one-time fee, which has yet to be determined. In the meantime, trademark owners should note that the so-called "pre-reservation" is not actually a reservation at all -- it is only an "expression of interest," and as such does not confer ownership in the reserved names, or even a right of first refusal when the .xxx names open for registration. Instead, these expressions of interest "will ensure that you get notified in advance of the appropriate allocation period and about the availability of the names you have indicated." Note that it is not necessary to "pre-reserve" a domain name in order to register that domain during the sunrise period, but it certainly can't hurt and is free of charge.

While traditional rights protection mechanisms, such as the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), will apply to .xxx domain names, and while ICM Registry has implemented a host of other protection mechanisms that will aid trademark owners seeking to combat infringing - or simply disparaging - use of valuable brands, trademark owners should consider "pre-reserving" and/or defensively registering key .xxx domain names containing valuable trademarks.

Massachusetts General Hospital Telestroke Program Chooses Vidyo for Healthcare Video Conferencing and Telemedicine.

The Vidyo Platform Delivers Natural, Affordable, Interoperable HD Multi-Party Video Communications for Medical Exams and Consultations

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Vidyo[R], Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced that the Partners Healthcare Telestroke Program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) - supporting 27 hospitals throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine -- has deployed a revolutionary telemedicine communication and collaboration solution based on the company's award-winning platform. The Vidyo telehealth solution will be used for video conferencing and sharing data to enable specialists from MGH to examine patients at remote hospitals miles away to diagnose and recommend treatments. MGH selected Vidyo for the next stage of its telestroke program.

The Vidyo Healthcare Solution - A Quantum Leap Forward

"We were looking for a telemedicine solution with very specific features and benefits," said Dr. Lee Schwamm, M.D., Director of the Partners Telestroke Center in Boston, and Vice Chairman, Dept. of Neurology/Director of Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital. "The system had to work well, even with suboptimal network quality and also needed to be portable and flexible to allow us to work at a variety of different facilities, to expand our outpatient follow-up, non-acute care and provider-to-provider communications."

MGH needed Vidyo to be interoperable with installed video conferencing systems at other hospitals outside of the MGH corporate network. The team also tested the Vidyo platform with the hospitals' firewall configurations, "as-is," to make sure the Vidyo platform would function with little or no support from IT people. They required that Vidyo be very adaptable to every environment with very little 'tweaking' from their IT group and that it deliver extremely natural, clear video fidelity. "When we conduct acute care stroke exams, video clarity is mandatory so that we can observe any subtleties of patient's muscle movement and speech and detect problems; we need to clearly see the pupils in a patient's eyes," said Dr. Schwamm.

"The barriers to high quality, affordable telemedicine have traditionally been high," said Ofer Shapiro, CEO and co-founder of Vidyo. "Vidyo delivers a breakthrough solution that requires little to no administrative or technical help to deploy, use and maintain. We deliver over 'best effort networks' like the Internet, which opens up access to many more practitioners and patients in rural and under-served communities where care is most needed. MGH is demonstrating how Vidyo is positively changing the telehealth market, opening it up so that high-quality, affordable video communication is within reach to all providers. Vidyo offers MGH a quantum leap forward in image quality and temporal resolution when operating over any bandwidth, especially lower bandwidth. Of all telehealth options available, only Vidyo can achieve this. Vidyo enables more practitioners to become telemedicine providers, which is good news for patients and the healthcare industry."

About Vidyo for Healthcare

The Vidyo telemedicine solution delivers a scalable, cost-effective, telemedicine solution that leverages the public Internet and existing general purpose IP networks at medical facilities to enable secure, encrypted remote doctor-patient and doctor-doctor interactions that are as close as possible to face-to-face meetings. The Vidyo platform allows healthcare providers to deploy high definition (HD), low latency VidyoConferencing anywhere an examination, operation, or consultation needs to take place, from within medical facilities and at patient homes, clinics, other hospitals or physician home offices. It is a complete, end-to-end solution with a variety of endpoint options, including: HD Room Systems for conferences or auditorium events, desktop endpoints for doctor's offices, simple-click, touch screen options for patients at home, and customized endpoints for medical cart use in hospital emergency rooms, operating rooms or clinics. Vidyo delivers HIPAA compliant encryption for its endpoints and is able to integrate with third party H.323 and SIP based video conferencing systems. It easily integrates with established healthcare environments, supporting a variety of medical devices and interoperating with existing conferencing infrastructure.

Studio shake-up reflects changing Hollywood.

LOS ANGELES: Management shake-ups at movie giants Universal and Disney reflect the industry s difficulty in adjusting to the digital age and failure to halt sliding DVD sales, analysts say.

In the space of a few weeks, Disney has shown the door to its respected and long-serving chairman Dick Cook while Universal wielded the axe on co-chairmen Marc Shmuger and David Linde on Monday.

"These shifts expose a serious stress that is bubbling to the surface throughout the entertainment industry, and especially theatrical motion pictures," said Jason Squire, a film industry expert at the University of Southern California and editor of "The Movie Business Book."

"At this transitional point between traditional media and new media, the need for a revised business model for motion pictures may be at the heart of some of these changes."

As young consumers increasingly turn to the Internet, mobile phones or video games as sources of entertainment, studios could no longer look to cash in on DVD sales, said Brandon Davis, president of the boxofficemojo.com website.

"DVD is no longer the savior it used to be," he said. "Studios do need to adapt a strategy to continue to make a lot of money in the home video market, and more generally in all the post-theatrical market."

According to figures from Digital Entertainment Group, sales of DVDs tumbled by nine percent in 2008 and nosedived by 13.5 percent in the first six months of 2009. The freefall presents a problem for studios, which rely on DVD earnings to maximize profits.

Disney s decision to replace Cook with Rich Ross -- the former chief of the televised Disney Channel -- signaled intent to return to basics, according to analyst Gitesh Pandya of boxofficeguru.com.

"At Disney, I think they are going to streamline more and try to focus more on the films they do well: family films," Pandya told AFP.

"One thing we have seen this year is that 3D cinema has become huge, and Disney certainly wants to continue to be a major player in that."

Producer Mark Gill, chief executive of The Film Department and former president of Warner Independent Pictures, said Ross s arrival indicated Disney were planning to focus attention on all areas of the empire.

"You can see they wanted somebody who could work with all parts of the company so they can do well in merchandising, in television, online -- not just in the studio," Gill told AFP.

During his reign at the Disney Channel, Ross presided over the phenomenally successful teen franchises "Hannah Montana" and "High School Musical." But Squire said the multi-faceted franchise strategy carried certain risks.

"These (franchises) are potentially lucrative, but also risky, because we don t discuss the Disney efforts in similar franchises that have not succeeded as well," he said.

At Universal meanwhile, the changes announced this week follow a disappointing summer at the box office where big-budget productions such as comedies "Land of the Lost" and "Funny People" flopped.

Universal s share of the box office has fallen to just 8.5 percent, significantly trailing the other majors -- Warner Bros, Paramount, Columbia, Fox and Disney. According to Gill, Universal s woes can be traced back to the problem affecting all major studios of soaring overheads.

"The costs of the major studios are still far too high for the market," he said. "The studios need to cut costs by more than 50 percent and they won t be able to do it. Their costs are way out of the line."

"Two reasons: the habits, they are so used to paying a lot of money for everything. The other one is fear. They are afraid that if they cut costs, they won t be able to compete. But they don t have a choice."

The evolving Lotus Notes information industry. (includes related article) (Lotus Notes workgroup software)

The world of online information retrieval continues to change. New software environments allow end-users to receive, analyze, store, and share information without venturing into the complex world of networks, arcane command-driven systems, or database structures. The Internet has burst on the scene and continues to grow at an explosive rate as new uses are found and more users get connected. Many think the Internet is the answer to their information retrieval needs, but it has significant difficulties--security may be lacking, navigation and finding information is difficult, and a knowledge of UNIX command structures may be required. Information retrieval, therefore, continues to be difficult for many end-users, and some may be doing without the information they need to make decisions and do their jobs.

End-users are not the only ones experiencing difficulties in the information industry. Information providers have long wished to sell their products and services directly to endusers. They have found it difficult to do so because of user-hostile interfaces, the need to be aware of and track a plethora of diverse databases, and lack of access to users' desktops.

A new genre of software, called groupware, shows considerable promise in solving the problems of information users and providers. Approximately four years ago, Lotus Development Corporation introduced its Notes software platform. Lotus Notes heralded the beginning of groupware, and since then, it has become the recognized market leader and a de facto groupware standard. Estimates indicate there are at least 500,000 Notes users today, and that Notes is responsible for more than 10 percent of Lotus' $981 million annual revenue stream (1). Notes usage is growing extremely rapidly. One indication of this growth is the increase in attendance from 3,000 at the 1994 Lotusphere conference, Lotus' annual event for Notes users, to 7,000 at the 1995 conference.

The primary use of groupware is collaboration--data and information sharing among communities of users. Using groupware, a community of geographically dispersed users can read, contribute to, or modify a database, and Notes keeps track of the changes through a process known as replication. If the user maintains a local copy of a database (on a laptop computer, for example), the local copy of the database can be updated by replicating changes made by that user or any other authorized user since the previous access. The entire database is not downloaded, thus saving the user a singnificant amount of time and possibly telecommunications costs. Not only does groupware cut costs but it significantly increases user productivity. Productivity increases of well over 100 percent have been reported by several research studies. (For an excellent nontechnical overview of how Notes works and how Notes applications are developed, see Lotus Notes at Work by DeJean and DeJean (2).)

Notes is used in a wide variety of business scenarios, such as tracking sales clients, delivering information to investment brokers, coordinating document reviews, improving work cycles, and shortening the sales process. The Boston Police Department even developed a Lotus Notes database of suspected gang members and used it to track their activities (3). Using their database, the Police Department was able to identify areas where increased police presence was necessary. They credited the use of Notes with helping to reduce violence on the city streets.

Groupware is also used in library and information centers to manage work flows, track user requests, and other tasks. Kristin Liberman and Jane Rich have described how Lotus uses Notes for these purposes in its own information center (4). Clearly, groupware, and Notes in particular, is used to enhance information sharing and meet very diverse business needs. Notes has achieved a remarkable penetration in the corporate marketplace, and leading companies in many industries have embraced it (some have bought licenses for tens of thousands of users!).

LOTUS NOTES AS A PUBLISHING PLATFORM

Lotus Notes was originally developed for workgroup sharing and document management applications. However, information providers soon discovered that its versatility makes it an excellent electronic publishing platform and information delivery channel because it facilitates easy information sharing through a friendly user interface. It allows publishers to achieve direct access to the user's desktop--long a goal of many information providers and database producers. Developing Notes applications, while not a trivial task, is relatively straightforward for a competent programmer. In fact, "Notes Applications Developer" has become a recognized job function in the software industry, and most organizations making an extensive use of Notes have hired individuals to develop Notes applications for their in-house uses. Similarly, information providers entering this field are also hiring or training programmers to develop Notes products for the information market.

As the number of Notes users has increased, many information providers have climbed on the Notes bandwagon and are rushing to develop and market their products as Notes applications. A new segment of the information industry based on Lotus Notes is quickly evolving.

THE LOTUS NOTES INFORMATION SERVICES MARKET

Since Notes is a good information publishing platform, Notes-based information services are rapidly being developed and brought to market. The current market environment is reminiscent of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Online databases were being developed at a furious rate, and databank services such as DIALOG competed strongly in a race to acquire and host as many databases as they could on their online information retrieval services. This article includes tables listing 24 information products currently available commercially in Notes format. Because of the speed at which the market is moving, these lists cannot be considered to be comprehensive. (Lists such as these become outdated almost as soon as they are compiled!)

The position of the players in today's Notes information services market mirrors the development of the traditional online services marketplace. Many companies and products that online information users have come to know and respect are entering the Notes information market. Some publishers have simply converted their databases to Notes format and added Notes to their repertoire of delivery channels. Others have developed new products by extracting portions of existing ones and combining them into a Notes database. (The evolution of the CD-ROM information market followed a similar path--first, existing information products were converted to CD-ROM, then entirely new products appeared.)

Today's information industry is composed of two major segments:

1) Database producers (also called content providers) who publish or collect original publications and build a database from them, and

2) Aggregators (also known as hosts or information providers) who acquire or lease databases and provide a common platform, search interface, and value-added services such as training and customer service.

The Notes world is remarkably similar. Aggregators, who are acquiring content in the Notes format and making it available, are emerging while other publishers sell Notes-based content directly to users.

THE INFORMATION INTERMEDIARY

The player that is missing from the Notes information delivery chain is the professional intermediary. An organization using Notes typically installs a server and purchases Notes clients, which are installed on users' workstations. Users interact through the clients with the server to access, search, or create databases. To them, retrieval and searching for information using Notes is simply another operation that works like other Notes applications.

There is thus little need for an intermediary to search Notes information products and deliver output to requesters as there has been with traditional online services. With Notes, the interface is familiar to the users, and the information services and products are delivered directly to them.

Information sellers, of course, are delighted with this situation--they have long been searching for a way to reach the end-user and have expended considerable energy and resources to achieve that goal. The Notes platform allows them to tailor their products for the end-user market and, given the extensive and growing Notes market penetration, expand their markets.

Intermediaries, however, should not be alarmed at this turn of events. By shifting their extensive and valuable skills to embrace the Notes platform, they will be able to perform a valuable service for their customers by developing Notes information applications. The emergence of Notes is just one more indication that the role of the professional information intermediary is changing and becoming more challenging (5).

PUBLIC NOTES SERVICES

Installation of Notes requires a significant commitment of resources by an organization. A special computer, or server, must be purchased, installed, and loaded with Notes databases. All users ("end-points" in Notes parlance) must have Notes client software, which controls their desktops and allows them to use Notes.

Notes users must not only invest financial resources to obtain the server, but they must also make a continuing commitment to establishing and maintaining the network on which those servers run. To access information services outside of the organization, information feeds must be acquired and installed, servers must be cross-certified (i.e., given permission to access one another), user access control lists must be developed, and communications links must be installed and maintained. Not only are significant hardware and software resources necessary, but the human costs of such an installation are also significant. Many organizations, particularly smaller ones, cannot or do not wish to purchase a server and devote the resources necessary to maintain it, as well as connections to its workstations and interfaces with the outside world.

Recently, these problems have been addressed with the introduction of publicly accessible Notes networks, which allow a user to purchase only the client software and then access a public Notes server to use Notes. AT&T has taken a lead in this area by forming a joint marketing agreement with Lotus to deploy Notes servers in its public network. The service, currently going through a controlled introduction phase, is called AT&T Network Notes (see sidebar). Information services are actively being recruited for AT&T Network Notes and the first one has already been announced (6).

STRUCTURE OF A TYPICAL LOTUS NOTES INFORMATION PRODUCT

As mentioned earlier, Notes uses a process known as replication in which the new information added to a database is sent to appropriate users on demand or at regularly scheduled intervals. Customized, regularly updated news services are particularly appropriate for delivery via Notes, and many of today's Notes-based information products are of this type. Several Notes-based newsletters and news services are already commercially available.

However, Notes is not appropriate for real-time interactive searches of large databases. Since the largest single database that can be accommodated on a Notes installation is one gigabyte, one would not expect large online retrieval services such as those offered by LEXIS-NEXIS or Knight-Ridder Information to put their databases up on Notes. Instead, such information companies can be expected to develop new products especially designed for the Notes market. (LEXIS-NEXIS has already announced a Notes-based information product.)

Typically, a Notes information product consists of a database of articles that are indexed under broad categories and displayed to the user as a series of views--organized presentations of the information. The views allow the Notes user to look at the information by subject, date, publisher, or in any other way that the application developer has structured the product. Some Notes databases are also full-text indexed, providing a basic searching capability to the user. (The search engine included with Notes is Verity's TOPIC (7).) Creation of the views is done by the application developer, thus giving the database producer full control over the appearance of the product--a capability not generally available with traditional online retrieval services. (Notes, therefore, has enabled a fundamental shift in information delivery, moving control from the online host to the publisher.)

FIRST! FOR NOTES

To illustrate a typical Notes information product, some screen shots from an AT&T subscription to First! for Notes, a service offered by INDIVIDUAL, Inc., are shown. (First! is a subscription service, delivering news on topics of interest to the subscriber in a variety of formats, one of which is Notes. For further information on INDIVIDUAL and its products, see the article by Wiegner (8).)

Figure 1 (page 64) shows a view of the database by subject. Clicking on topic 2, "National Information Infrastructure," brings up the screen shown in Figure 2 (page 66). One can select a more narrow topic of interest (here, "The Internet" was selected), to arrive at the screen shown in Figure 3 (page 66). Note that items replicated into the database for each day are shown, and if one were to click on one of the titles, the full text of the item would appear on the screen. (The stars on the left show items that have not been opened by the user--by this means, it is easy to track which items have been accessed and which ones are new to the database.) One can also view the database by company, as shown in Figure 4 (page 66). Figure 5 (page 71) shows the results of a search. The search term ("Network Notes") is entered in the area immediately below the toolbar, and a list of hits, ranked by relevance (notice the shaded bar to the left of the titles) appears. Clicking on a title brings up the full text, with the search terms highlighted (Figure 6).

CONCLUSION

Basic data about currently available Notes information products are shown in the tables that accompany this article. Table 1 (page 68) lists aggregators providing access to a variety of products, and Table 2 (page 69) lists Notes products available from single-source publishers and sold directly by them. In general, producers or publishers of individual Notes-based titles are not included in the tables if they are available through one of the listed service aggregators. Only publicly-available or announced products have been included in the tables, and, as noted earlier, these cannot be considered exhaustive lists. Several entries were taken from The Lotus Notes Guide, a useful directory of Notes applications compiled and published at regular intervals by Lotus.

RELATED ARTICLE: New Solutions to Old Information Retrieval Problems

New services currently under development by AT&T and its partners have the potential to solve many problems of information users and information providers. AT&T has joined forces with Novell, Inc. to develop AT&T NetWare Connect Services, which will provide value-added capabilities: security, user registration and validation, navigation, and directory services, as well as access to powerful applications to both users and information providers. Novell's LAN technology is the foundation of AT&T NetWare Connect Services. AT&T and Novell will expand connectivity beyond a single enterprise to suppliers, customers, and partners while maintaining the security and integrity of the data communications process. A major function of AT&T NetWare Connect Services will be access to and retrieval of electronic information.

The first application of AT&T NetWare Connect Services is access to the Lotus Notes platform. As described in the accompanying article, information retrieval is a significant application of Lotus Notes, and many well-known information providers are developing products that can be delivered on the Lotus Notes platform.

Installation of Notes requires a significant commitment by an organization. Many end-users wish to use the Notes platform but prefer to avoid making a large investment in a server, networking technology, or the human resources needed to maintain the hardware. Likewise, information providers may wish to use Notes to deliver their products but prefer to focus on their core areas of expertise without the need to maintain servers and networking interfaces.

AT&T Network Notes directly addresses these problems. Notes servers will be installed in the public data network and will be accessible to AT&T Network Notes subscribers on a dial-up basis or through their LANs. Users are freed from the necessity of purchasing a server and maintaining it and its connecting networks. AT&T and Lotus Development Corporation have entered into a joint marketing and development agreement, under which the AT&T Network Notes service will be developed and marketed. Lotus is developing simplified Notes client software to access the publicly available servers.

Information retrieval is an important application for AT&T NetWare Connect Services and AT&T Network Notes. The groupware environment transforms the end-user's workstation from an isolated entity to a powerful entry point on the network, and the value-added AT&T NetWare Connect Service features make information, processes, and resources easy to find and use. Users can form workgroups and collaborate, conduct discussions, and access information. They can use Lotus Notes without acquiring or maintaining costly server networks and can access applications such as electronic mail and online databases in a secure environment. Information providers gain direct access to end-users and cost-effectively expand their markets.
